David,
Go to Radio Shack: and buy yourself a new pencil type soldering iron, one
with a small pointed tip, 25-watts would be great (64-2070) for $6.99.
Oh, you have a new iron. The one you mentioned is fine.
Do not use flux. Use standard .032 diameter 60/40 lead/tin solder 2.5 oz
for $3.79 (64-005). It has rosin flux in it. Let the pencil heat up for 5
minutes, when the solder melts easily when applied to the tip; then have at
it. Remember to feed the solder to the component; not to the solder pencil
tip. Their are two transistors that you should be careful with NOT to
overheat; just solder them quickly. For that matter, if your iron is hot
enough, ALL components should be heated as little as possible; just quick
accurate application of solder. Unless you are really a sloppy solderer,
you shouldn't need solder remover braid; but it's nice to have in case or
for future projects.
I highly recommend after you complete that you clean the bottom of the board
with flux remover (64-4330) $15.99, careful not to get any on top of the
board, and let dry thoroughly before powering up. I don't know if they have
a smaller bottle. Flux if left on the board can be problematic.
