What I do is "check for missing" right after I pull the CDs. Then when I put
them back in, as you said, I just need to scan for new/missing, which is quick.

Jeff--

I frequently remove a handful of CDs to take to work with me.  When I
return with them, I make it a point to put them in previously empty
slots.

I then scan for New/Missing, which only takes a few minutes.  The
returnees are quickly identified and made available for use.
